Waxed cardboard boxes for produce (fruits and vegetables) and protein (meats, seafood & poultry) are a significant contributor to a company's waste hauling charges.  Because of their chemical coating, waxed cardboard boxes can take up to 50 years to break down in a landfill. Annually we send 600,000 tons to landfills.
 
Waxed cardboard is commonly used in supermarkets, restaurants, produce packing companies and other food service businesses for products like ice-packed produce because the wax protects the cardboard from becoming soggy and breaking down.
 
Unfortunately, this helpful feature also makes waxed cardboard unacceptable for recycling. Depending on the material characteristics and quantity, waxed cardboard can be composted or made into other products.
